Collection comprises scrapbooks in two series, one for Wellington region and the other for the rest of New Zealand. These contain pages on individual post offices showing photographs of the buildings, maps of the surrounding area, samples of hand-franked and registered envelopes, notes on the history of the office and other relevant material. The other series include loose collections of postmarked envelopes, first day covers, postmarked slogans and other variations of post marking. Includes samples of hand-franked and machine-franked envelopes, some signed by postmasters. There is also an annotated run of the 'Mail Coach' periodical 1965-1976; papers on post office history compiled by members of the Postal History Society of New Zealand; samples of post office stationery; papers on philatelic conferences; scattered administrative papers of the Postal History Society and the Hutt Valley Philatelic Society; working papers, notes and correspondence; newspaper cuttings. Reflecting the researcher's main period of activity, most of records are dated between 1965 and 1976.

Jean Batten was born on 15 September 1909 in Rotorua, New Zealand. She and her mother moved from New Zealand to Britain in 1930 where Batten immediately pursued her ambition of learning to fly. In 1934, she flew solo from England to Australia in 14 days, 22½ hours, shattering Amy Johnson’s record by four days and becoming a world celebrity.
